I will regret posting this, for the reason that I want my own private Grand Canyon, and that is what the Vista Points represent. Not technically in the Park, these public lands are linked by Forest Service roads as well as by the Rainbow Rim Trail, a relatively level rim trail that winds into and out of the forests. Elevation and vegetation imbue the trail with a sense of the montaine. The trail links the Vista Points of Parasawampitts, Fence, Locust, Timp and North Timp.
These supernal overlooks offer near-rim campsites and few people, the last time I ventured there. At certain times of the year, prepare yourself for strong winds shrieking through the massive ponderosa that stand against the rim. It’s a drive to get there over well-graded roads from Jacob Lake, but you won’t regret the effort.
